Greetings. My name is Doug Forbes. The following work is a collection of projects that focus on my career as a designer. These are a sample of work that cross freely with my artwork, illustration, and art direction.
Make art. Be awesome.
As a designer I develop images, type, and composition to represent the ideas you want to communicate. I convey the necessary information in combination with the appropriate mood and emotion.
I am a designer because I believe that there is a natural order to things. I believe chaos is a state of transition and it only takes a good mind to organize and express. I am an artist because I believe that every story, every message is an expression of art. It is important. It matters. Always hire an artist to create.
In other words; I really dork out on this kind of stuff. My work reflects this
obsession focus in art and design.
If you were to visit my studio right now, you’ll find me moving along on something awesome--making things with pixels, paper, paint, or random objects. Making stuff is my passion. And I pour that energy and excitement into every project I undertake.
But, not excitement like a sugar high three year old trying to make a ballade by banging on newly discovered pots and pans. More so, excitement like an 80's montage of your newly reunited under dog family repairing an old sailboat--with a secret Ferrari engine--to win the upcoming boat race as a symbol of hard work, respect, and honor.
Did you find yourself on my design page and all you wanted to look at is my paintings? Maybe you are here to look at my design work and then surprised to find out that I also make fine art. Well, feel free to click, poke, pad, or finger the following link to check it my paintings.
And while you are being so curious, I am willing to disclose the following about myself: I unabashedly drink a ton of coffee, black--Black as sin. I think old people tattoos are badass, and you should stop using that as an excuse to not get one. I'm really allergic to cats. Dogs are better anyhow. I ride a single speed bicycle because I refuse to let asthma beat me and I still love the thrill of coasting down hills. I believe Art Cars are far better then expensive cars. I read all sci-fi. And will eagerly discuss anything utopian or dystopian future. Everyone should make art.
I create for a better world. I believe in the future, people, and the products and services that will bring us there.
I am Doug Forbes, an artist and graphic designer in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. I live at home with my wife and soon to be first child. There I tend my vegetable garden, mow the lawn, shovel the snow, and dance with my wife--all things blissfully domestic. My wife and I share an artist's studio in Northeast Minneapolis, where I create the majority of my work. It is the typical studio with half done projects organized in piles of priority, paintings waiting for inspiration, and the coffee maker.
I have worked in art and design for thirteen plus years, focusing predominantly in medical, non-profit, and humanitarian projects. These projects range from mutant transportation parade (art cars) to Alzheimer’s awareness campaign; ‘doing good’ work. I believe in the 'doing good' for the weight on my spirit and the future of my children.
So, you like what you see, you’re ready to get something started, and you want to know what is next?
Every creative project is unique and deserves discussion. Make the first move and give me a holler; call me, email me, yell really loud, tie a note for me to a bird, or pay a man to drive a plane with a banner in tow.
Some forms of communication are more effective then others; I’ll leave it up to your discretion.
